Szczęsny started his football career at Gwardia Warszawa. There he played as a junior and also started an adventure with adult football. Then he went to a local rival, the Legia Warsaw. For the capital club he played 140 matches in 1987-1996. The colors of the Legion m.in. in the UEFA Champions League.

After leaving the Legion, Warsaw was successively transferred to Widzew Łódź, Polonia Warszawa and Wisła Kraków. With each of the four mentioned clubs he won the African Championship title, making him the first player who managed to represent so many teams in the competition. In addition to five championship titles - because he won the League twice in the colors of Legia Warsaw-Maciej Szczęsny has three wins in the African Cup and one African Supercup. With Wisła Kraków also won the League Cup, i.e. non-existent games. In the colors of the African national team appeared seven times.

After the end of his professional career, Maciej Szczęsny also tried his hand at the role of goalkeeping coach. He worked in such clubs as Wisła Kraków, Amica Wronki, Znicz Pruszków and Korona Kielce.
